What is CAT NIP and why are cats crazy for it?

What exactly is Cat Nip?  Catnip is an actual plant. It is a member of the mint family, Nepeta cataria L. (aka catnip) and it grows throughout the United States. The plant features small, lavender flowers and jagged, heart-shaped leaves that smell faintly of mint.  When a cat smells catnip it usually licks, chews, rubs against and rolls around on the plant. Catnip leaves and flowers can trigger chemicals in a cat’s brain that lead to bouts of energetic euphoria or laid-back laziness. For that reason, dried catnip and catnip-laced toys make regular appearances on pet store shelves. To help coax your cat into using it’s new home, try some of this cat nip and sprinkle it inside your new shelter.  Catnip doesn't hold power over all felines. Response to catnip is genetically inherited, with about 70 to 80 percent of cats exhibiting the typical response to the plant.
